Dallas Road

To the south, the Olympic Mountains form a massive, snow-capped wall rising above the 32-km wide Strait of Juan de Fuca. Best enjoyed from the five kilometer stretch of parks and beaches along Dallas Rd., the enormity of the Olympic Mountain range is always breathtaking even for long-term residents. Dallas Road winds along the ocean front and is the southern-most road in Victoria. A 250 meter greenbelt along its southern median sits above a long 30-meter cliff providing wonderful views of the mountains, water, grass and sky. To the west, the forests of the Sooke Hills roll towards the open ocean.

Downtown Victoria

Originally, Victoria was the first stage for prospectors and miners heading to the Caribou and Yukon gold-rushes. Built around the site of a small Hudson’s Bay fort, Downtown Victoria has the feel of old San Francisco. Colourful gingerbread facades front many of the storefronts in the Old Town district nestled around the Inner Harbour. With much of its heritage preserved, parts of Victoria still resemble a 19th century city.

Inner Harour

Victoria was built on one of the most remarkable harbours in North America. Considered one of the busiest working harbours in Canada, the Inner Harbour bustles with ferries, barges, float planes, several tall ships, sail boats, and numerous water-taxies. Several docks and marinas provide downtown mooring to hundreds of private boats, creating a bobbing forest of masts, lines and flags along the Government Street causeway. Home to much of the southern fishing fleet, Victoria’s Inner Harbour offers no end of inspiration for artists and photographers.

Upper Harbour

Mount Baker

Whales abound in the waters off Victoria. Home to three unique resident pods of orcas, Victoria offers year-round whale-watching. Many residents know the trick of heading to the Gonzales Observatory where the whale-watching companies place their whale spotters.

Rainforest

Vancouver Island is a sub-tropic rainforest. Less than an hours drive and Victorians can hike among some of the largest living trees on the planet. A day trip between Sooke and Port Renfrew bring locals and visitors to four unique beaches with well-marked raised trails into remaining old growth and older second growth rainforest. A few hours “up-island” bring Victorians to vast stretches of remaining old growth forest. Campers and photographers will find endless inspiration and challenge.
